Is the Australian Shepherd the Right Breed for you?
•Moderate Maintenance: Grooming should be performed regularly to keep its fur in good shape. Little to no trimming or stripping
•Moderate Shedding: Expect this dog to shed regularly. Be prepared to vacuum often. Brushing will reduce shedding as well as make
the coat softer and cleaner.
•Moderately Easy Training: Training won't require too much attention and effort, though it won't be easier than other breeds. Expect
results to come gradually.
•Great Watchdog Ability: This dog will bark and alert its owners when an intruder is present. It exhibits very protective behavior, acts
fearless toward any aggressor, and will do what it takes to guard and protect its family.
•Low Adaptability: It is not suited for apartment living and is best with a large yard or acreage. This breed is able to
handle most types of hot and cold weather.
•Very Active: It will need daily exercise to maintain its shape. Committed and active owners will enjoy performing fitness activities with
•Good with Kids: This is a suitable breed for kids and is known to be playful, energetic, and affectionate around them.
Aussies are an active family oriented breed. They are very giving and affectionate to their family members. They are a herding breed,
which means they will instinctively try to herd your children and other pets, even you! They are however, shy and slow to warm up to
strangers. They are bred to be an aggressive dog, but I have seen an Aussie on a leash move in front of it's owner when a stranger or
another dog approaches to put itself in "Harms Way". An Aussie will defend it's family. You must socialize an Aussie when it is a puppy
to keep this defense mechanism in it's proper place.
Aussies require play time or work. Chasing balls or throwing Frisbees for them to catch is excellent. Swimming is an exercise they
love! Long walks or hikes are another good choice. Mind games are very entertaining for them. Like playing hide and seek with a toy
or treat. Aussies excel at agility and can go through most obstacles with ease.
